Whenever i say I am a nudist, the looks I get are always the same. Looks of shock and suspicion. As if being a at home nudist is some horrible thing. And if i even mention that I would like to visit a naturist retreat one day, then i have actually been asked if i am crazy, kinda perverted, or just really desperate for sex. At this point i usually give up trying to have a conversation about Blacks and Naturism. Because i already know it will go no where. I will just get more looks of fear and perversion, and black people will avoid me or think I’m a weirdo. Its really sad.

Try to understand the historical factors that shape the response you may receive. Like so much else of African cultures the practice of being clothes free was deemed barbaric by Europeans colonizers. Adopting European values was a matter of survival. Those values continue to be embedded in African-American culture today for some of the same reasons.

I don’t know whether it is the same for Americans of African heritage, but first-generation African immigrants into Australia do seem to be guided more by cultural tradition and social mores than whites; I see less inclination for individualism and independent thought among them. The reactions of people from Africa in my neighbourhood to my home nudity range from alarm to nonplussed, but it is clear that none of them would remotely consider trying it out for themselves. Whereas I do occasionally see signs that Euros are thinking hmm, that could be nice, being out in the back garden naked, I would like to try that.
