It’s official – nakedness leads to improvements in body image!

https://www.bn.org.uk/news/information/about-naturism/its-official-nakedness-leads-to-improvements-in-body-image-r705/

Regular readers will know of the ground-breaking work done by Dr Keon West of Goldsmith’s University and how his research showed that being naked boosts self-esteem, happiness and life satisfaction.

Last summer, with administrative assistance and some funding from British Naturism, Dr. Keon hosted part II of the work and tested whether similar results could be achieved with people who weren’t attending a specific nude event or gathering.

The results have now been peer reviewed and published in full. They are in an academic journal and currently behind a paywall, but BN member Nick Mayhew-Smith has looked through the article, and has produced a short summary of the experiment and the positive conclusions it reached, copied in below:

Nick writes:

So for the first time it was possible to test whether communal naked activity leads to rather than merely accompanies improvements in body image (Body Appreciation). And body image was measured before and after the trial took place.

In total 51 participants arrived for the experiment, half of whom spent 45 minutes socializing with clothes on (the control group), the other half doing the same naked. The sexes were roughly balanced (27 men, 24 women) and also each of the two groups (control and naked) had approximately the same proportion of women and men. The participants were told in advance that the experience had a potential for experiencing communal nudity, which could introduce a slight bias in the findings but this was offset by the fact that they were non-naturist identified and also that they were split into two randomized groups following their recruitment for the study.

The experiment also measured Relative Perceived Attractiveness of Others and Social Physique Anxiety, partly in order to determine where the effect of changes in body image might have been mediated.

Dr. Keon used the same body appreciation scale described in his 2018 paper, and measurements before and after the experiment showed a clear and significant difference between the naked group and the clothed group. For the clothed group, 45 minutes spent socializing with clothes on made no statistical difference to their levels of body appreciation, but it was measurably higher (on the scale used roughly 3.3 to 3.8) in the naked group.

The second measure Relative Perceived Attractiveness of Others demonstrated that nakedness had no effect, but as might be expected Social Physique Anxiety was significantly reduced in the naked group. A reduction in Social Physique Anxiety was therefore determined as a possible explanation for why naked socializing has a positive effect on Body Appreciation. In other words, improvement in body image could not simply be produced by seeing other people naked in a non-participatory way.

The participants were all happy to engage in the experiment once they were given their instructions, whether naked or clothed. And there were no differences in the responses between men and women or between different age ranges. A total of 90% of the participants were white, the others South Asian (2%), East Asian (2%), Middle Eastern (2%) or mixed ethnicity (4%).

I, like many other women, went through a transformation when I was in a nudist environment. Surrounded by people of all shapes and sizes, I went topless in Ibiza. In that moment, I didn’t suddenly love my body — but, I accepted it. I learned to say “fuck you” to hating it. I started to enjoy life, free from the constant anxiety that my body wasn’t “good enough” to do so.

Don’t get me wrong. This is not a post about body painting. I’m going to delve a little into the side of naturism of other ethnic groups. People of colour. Black people. Hispanic people. And why? Because I have found that around 95% of the naturist contacts I have on the internet are white. Caucasian.…

Naked gym classes now offered in New York City gym.

A article from the New York Daily News website

Get buff in the buff this new year.

Hanson Fitness, which boasts such celebrity clients as Rihanna, Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise, will be holding naked personal fitness classes to kick off 2018.

On Jan. 5 at 6 p.m., the fitness studio will have its first nude personal training session. The studio initially plans to host three sessions a week: one mixed, one for men, and one for women.

Located in SoHo (42 Wooster St, New York, N.Y., 10012), the class will be a “total body workout that uses your body weight as resistance to work the glute, butt, legs and core — making you look and feel good naked,” the company said in a press release. New year, nude you, they say.

Hanson studio founder Harry Hanson, fitness guru, said in the release, “Our approach makes sure our members get and stay in the absolute best shape, and our new naked personal fitness sessions are no exception. This new development brings with it a range of fitness and health benefits and allows our members to have a little cheeky fun in the process!”

While naked yoga has become an increasingly trendy and popular exercise, few places do full-body workouts in the nude. NKD Training in the UK has naked gym training, but it’s for men only.

Hanson Fitness says that working out nude keeps you cooler, releases endorphins, increases body awareness and gives you unrestricted movement. Plus: less laundry!

If guests are uncomfortable training in the complete nude, nude-colored underwear is permitted. Contact the studio to book a spot, find out about private sessions and inquire about costs.

If naked yoga is more your speed, head to Bold and Naked Yoga Studio in Midtown West, which has naked and clothed yoga classes, private sessions and other training programs.

Who Cares About Your Genitals

IPRM

Preface

I wrote this essay as part of a first year writing course I took this fall with Dr. Andrew Joseph Pegoda. To put this into context, I am a senior (5th year) undergraduate mathematics major taking this particular English core requirement for the third time. The original assignment was to define a mores or ritual in American culture. In freaking out I decided to write in a style that I was more familiar with. With that in mind, here is the result.

Who Cares About Your Genitals?

In 2003, Stephen Peter Gough began hiking naked through the United Kingdom “earning the nickname ‘the naked rambler’.” His more than thirty subsequent arrests resulted in “almost seven years in prison” (Gough 6 and 160). Given the potential consequences of public nudity, we can see how strongly western culture values the ritual of clothing oneself. Thus, we define socially mandated…

Nudist Idea #13: Hang a Clothing-Optional sign

Naked and Happy

NoticeOne of the best ways to increase nude time and our nudist friends is of course to let acquaintances know that you are a naturist. For many reasons, it’s not always possible to shout out loud that we are naturist and we want to spend more time naked. We have seen in previous ideas how to leave traces of our nudism, like leaving our naturist publications openly on our coffee table.

Image result for clothing optional signAnother way is to hang a clothing optional sign next to your door, to your swimming pool if you have one or in your lounge. You will find those signs available on Internet. Just go to Amazon, look for “Clothing Optional Sign” and you have tons of options to chose from, including metal and wooden panels, some being really nice.

I particularly like the Notice sign (the one above), indicating that nudists may be see beyond this point…

Protesting for Naturism/Nudism.

Its a idea.  Let’s think about it for a moment.  And yes, I am being serious here.  Maybe we should start protesting.  It would give us great visibility and help spread the word about naturism/nudism.  But maybe protest is too strong, too angry.  Maybe the idea of a Naturist March would be a good idea.  Yeah that’s the ticket.

Since the gays, the non-binary gendered. and the Social Justice Communists have been holding rallies, protests, and out right riots as of late i started thinking, “Why don’t we stage a peaceful march in support of the Naturist Community?”  We are definitely a minority, and maybe we could claim some kind of victim status (although personally i do not want to do that).  We could start a peaceful march during one of the Naked Bike Rides and spread from there.  Now i know what the next question is: “What do we protest/march for?”

  1.  More Nude Spaces.  I suggest when we march we claim that we are asking for more nude beaches, trails and parks where we can go nude.  Since we are paying our tax dollars to maintain these areas, we as naturists should be allowed to enjoy them in the nude as well.
  2. Change the Indecency Laws.  Right now a number of laws say you can be arrested for being seen nude via the window inside your house or being seen in the nude on your own property.  These laws need to be changed.
  3. Speaking Out.  We need to speak out and talk about being nude and the health benefits of it.  The march/protest would be the perfect chance to do so.
  4. Body Positive Outlook/Movement.  This one is totally optional.  While it will probably garner support from the SJWs and feminists, I am not sure I want their help since they are a bunch of communists and special snowflakes.  They’ll make us look more like loons then sane people.

Well that’s all i can think of for right now.  But i do wonder would any of us be willing to actually protest in the nude?
